Bird Enterprise Zone
Bird Enterprise Zone features two birds prominently displayed against a vibrant, patterned background. Both sides of the mural offer subtle differences in the birds' appearances and the background. The birds, painted in tan, brown, and white, contrast against the colorful backdrop, making them the main focal point. Their slightly varied hairstyles and designs distinguish the birds from one another. They are painted in a cartoon style, and they appear to be dancing or jumping. The background made of straight zigzag lines of varying thickness is visually striking but does not overwhelming the birds. Despite the 2D aesthetic the birds are clearly in the foreground creating depth in the mural. -
Bird Friend
Composition Jennifer Davis’s mural exhibits a dynamic composition that draws viewers in with its vibrant use of color and intricate layering. The arrangement of forms is balanced yet energetic, creating a sense of movement across the surface. The focal point, likely defined by contrasting colors and more intricate detail, directs attention and serves as an anchor for the surrounding elements.
Color The color palette is striking, with bold hues and a combination of warm and cool tones. This not only enhances visual interest but also evokes emotional responses. The use of contrasting colors amplifies the sense of depth and dimensionality, while harmonizing elements create a cohesive look.
Line Davis employs a mix of organic and geometric shapes, which draws you in. The fluidity of the lines suggests movement, while the sharp edges provide structure. This duality allows viewers to engage with the mural on multiple levels, prompting both emotional and intellectual responses. Texture & Space The texture of the mural varies throughout, with areas of smooth application contrasting against more rough, expressive strokes. This variation adds depth and invites exploration, enhancing the visual experience. The brick that it is painted on also adds texture. In the mural there are several overlapping parts that make it difficult to differentiate what is in the foreground which makes everything stand out.
Context In the context of St. Paul, Davis's mural serves not only as a piece of public art but also as a piece for community engagement and conversation. The location of this piece is on a metro bus station which I would be interested to know more about. The colors and soft lines remind me of images you would find in a children's book that are easily digestible. The black bird could be a symbol to inspire change or transformation.
